Here are some other things to consider: Don’t do stupid things with stupid people. If you’re carrying a firearm, avoidance is your best defense and staying away from potentially dangerous people and situations is your best bet. The best gunfight is the one you don’t attend. Dress for success. Carrying concealed means your firearm has to stay hidden. Dressing to cover it may necessitate some changes in your wardrobe or method of carry. Learn to avoid touching the pistol and adopt a posture that keeps it from “printing”—being visible through your clothing—as you move about your daily tasks. If you're carrying in a belt holster, use a sturdy belt and cinch it up tight to keep the belt from sagging and letting the pistol flop about. You’ll avoid having to hike up your pants, a potential giveaway that you’re carrying. You’re probably going to buy lots of holsters and multiple guns. When advising folks about guns and gear, they want me to tell them what one gun and holster to buy. The fact is, no matter what you start with, you’re very likely to buy more holsters, gear and guns as you travel along this journey. Most of us have boxes full of holsters and more than a few guns, so welcome to the party. And while you’re at it, don’t cheap out on cheap gear. You’ll regret it later and will only spend more to get what you should have gotten in the first place. Your life may depend on it.
Carry extra ammunition and consider carrying two guns. While any fight you are likely to get into will probably be handled with the ammunition in the gun, there are always exceptions. Mr. Murphy can rear his ugly head at the least expected times. What if you draw your pistol and the magazine falls out? What if more bad guys show up? The fastest reload is another gun, and if you’re carrying a small pistol, reloading or clearing malfunctions will be difficult at best and may be impossible under the stress of a fight. Train with your carry pistol and ammunition. You should shoot up your carry ammunition and replace it with fresh ammo from time to time, so turn it into a training exercise. Any time you switch ammunition, you should fire at least a box or two to make sure it functions in your handgun and to ensure you know where the ammo is hitting in relation to your sights. Yes, it’s expensive, but you’re worth it. Carry all the time, without fail. Once you’ve committed to carrying your pistol, you need to do it full time. There are lots of excuses not to carry, but the worst one is assuming nothing will happen. Look at it this way: if you knew you would get into a fight when you went out, would you leave the house? The purpose of defensive pistols is to meet unexpected life-threatening events. We carry them because we can’t always pack a rifle or have an armed escort of SEALs to look after us. Whether you’re new to concealed carry or an old hand, these tips will help keep you safe, and that’s the idea, isn’t it? To stay safe and out of trouble? Don’t be one of those folks who say, “I can’t believe this is happening. I wish I had a gun." the story of how the bag came to be is an added element to why I love it so much. Not only was the product designed as a solution to a problem, it becomes a more authentic American Dream story when one learns Ukoala bag creator Ma Yan, an engineer, is a Chinese immigrant woman who became a U.S. citizen in 2016. The Ukoala bag was designed to intentionally appeal to modern hippie-inspired fashion, but the idea itself was born out of a need to secure Ma Yan’s belongings during an overseas flight on which she was seated near strangers. Wanting to nap with the assurance that her purse would not be rummaged through while asleep, Ma Yan removed her shoelaces and secured her bag to her leg. When she went on to name the first iteration of today’s bag, she borrowed from the Australian marsupial, which Ma Yan had once observed effortlessly bellied-up to a tree in order to remain secured.
The first Ukoala bags were not intended to secure a concealed-carry gun. However, during the early days Ma Yan was displaying her bags at festivals and shows in Georgia, where she now lives, potential customers inquired whether it would hold a firearm. “Take the bag to your car and try it,” she told them. They consistently returned with the good news that they indeed were the ideal size for their handguns. With that one turn of events, the Ukoala bag had exponentially expanded its potential. “After the shows so many people came to talk to me about concealed carry,” said Ma Yan. “Since I personally had no knowledge about firearms, I decided to go to the local gun store to study the guns: What are the sizes? How do people use them? What is currently available on the market for concealed carry?” In other words, basic market research.
Afterward, Ma Yan says she built gun models out of foam board to adjust her bag size. The design went through 11 generations while she collected comments and suggestions to make adjustments. “I think the maturity of Ukoala Bag as a professional concealed-carry method is from market research, user habit study and user experience,” she says. The bag—even without the Crossbreed holster with which it is now supplied—is extraordinarily useful, limited to the user’s imagination and requirements.

How do I adjust the leg or waist straps?
All of our straps are adjustable.
The leg strap extends from 10-22" and fits a thigh up to 33". The standard waist belt extends from 18-47", and the extension piece 12-19". When an extension piece is added to a waist belt, it will fit waist sizes to 66". If you need a shorter length, cut the strap shorter and sew the end to prevent unraveling. Another option is to work with a seamstress or shoe shop to fit the length to meet your needs.

Plush, genuine shearling or smooth, neat hair-on hide lend the perfect high-end touch to these stocking projects. For step-by-step instructions, check out our blog post “Handmade Leather Stockings.”

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Cutting Tags
Mark and cut your leather pieces into roughly 2” wide x 3” long rectangles. The size is really up to
preference, you can do smaller or larger.
Step 2: Trimming Corners
I wanted my tags to have clipped corners, so I measured ½” in on the top and down the sides and cut
according to my marks. I varied the measurements a little bit so some tags have a more narrow top.
Step 3: Stamping
Time to stamp! If you are using natural veg tan leather, use a sponge and wet the leather so the stamps
will sink in nicely. The English bridle leather does not need to be wetted.
I used ¼” and 1/8” letter stamps. Again, this is up to preference. I was also looking for a more rustic look
so I did not use a straight edge, I just went for it and I really liked the outcome!
Step 4: Dyeing
Apply dye if desired. I skipped this step, but if you are using natural leather and you want it darker, now
would be the time to dye the tags. We recommend Fiebing’s Pro Dye and you can either dip dye or
brush it on.
Step 5: Tape Off Painting Area
Use Frog tape or painter’s tape to tape off the area you will be painting. You can do straight lines or
diagonal. I also did a fun triangle; the sky is the limit
Step 6: Painting
The paint I used was Angelus® Paint in Light Gray and Glitterlites Silver Spark. Putting a coat of paint first
and then the Glitterlites on top ensures the glitter covers the leather more evenly. I like a lot of glitter so
I did 2-3 coats for maximum shine. I did a few tags with Glitterlites only (top right) and they turned out
ok but I do like the ones with the paint underneath better.
Step 7:
Let the paint dry completely and then remove the tape.
Step 8: Add Strings
Take an art knife or utility knife and make a small slit at the top of the tag. This is where the string will
loop through. I used a scratch awl to widen the opening once the slit was cut. Take a piece of string or
thread (approx. 8” long), double it and slide it through the opening, bring the ends of the string through
the other looped end and pull tight.
